Look at the following slides to see why we study themes and how writers create them, sometimes unknowingly, in their work. Then try to identify the themes in the given extract from the Rossetti poem. Work with another student to compare what themes you found and what narrative devices are used to create them. Can you find examples from your other texts which have similar themes?
You should then try to identify themes across the texts, group examples from each text under a thematic heading and look out for narrative devices being used. See example slide below.
